anisius High School senior Griffin Schultz ’14
was recently selected as a winner of the
prestigious 2013 Toronto Urban Film Festival
(TUFF) for his original movie entitled “Home.”
Schultz’s film was selected from over 400 international
entries and aired on the transit system in September,
supporting the festival’s goal of giving the public greater
access to the art form. TUFF, Toronto’s annual subway film
festival, reaches over onemillion daily commuters on subway
platform screens across the transit system every September.
The selection of Schultz’s film also entitled his work to be
judged for the final awards of the annual festival. Viewers
were allowed to vote on line for their choices. He
was selected from all entries for the Festival’s “Best
Documentary of 2013.” He attended a special event
in Toronto in September to receive his award.
Complying with the festival’s rules, Schultz’s original film
is a silent movie centered on an urban theme. Schultz, who
has created other original films, worked with close friend
Alex Heider on the production during the summer. He chose
to focus on the challenges of creating a decent home in a
city such as Buffalo, challenges faced bymany poor families in
the city.
“I am just so blessed to have won this
international award and while the filmwas
not specifically tied to my school work, my
Canisius education was certainly an influence
on the topic I chose,”
Schultz says.
“Being men
and women for others is something I wanted to
encourage in the people who will see my film.
I wanted to convey the humility and respect for
others that I learned at Canisius through all my
service work and the immersion trip I took in
February this year.”
