he 2012-2013 sports season at Canisius
High School is one for the record books. An
unprecedented five Crusader sports teams were
ranked among the top five in New York State in
their respective sports during the past year.
They include:
Football
The Canisius Crusaders Football Team earned its first
undefeated season since the early 1970s – 5-0 in league
play, 11-0 overall – including a victory in the Monsignor
Martin League championship over Timon-St. Jude High
School. The team was ranked number one in the state
for Class AA. Based on this winning season, some national
polls have designated the Crusaders football team number
one in New York State in the 2013 season.
Swimming
The Canisius Crusaders Swim Team had yet another
undefeated season in the Monsignor Martin league, going on
to win third place in the NewYork Federation Championship
at Webster, NY. The team was ranked 20th in the national
team rankings by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches
Association. This marks the third time in the last five years
that the Canisius swim team has earned Top 25 ranking.
Soccer
The Canisius Crusader Soccer Team earned a record of
16-4-2 and clinched the New York State Catholic High
School Athletic Association Championship, the first time in
school history that the soccer program won a Catholic State
Championship. The historic game saw the Crusaders win
a hard-fought battle 2-1, over Chaminade. The team was
ranked #3 in the state for Class A. Canisius is among only
three area schools in the Monsignor Martin league to win
state Catholic titles in soccer.
Volleyball
The Canisius Crusaders Volleyball Team earned a tie for first
place in the regular season and captured its 13th consecutive
Monsignor Martin League championship with a 3-0, straight
set win over St. Joe’s. Finishing the year 25-5, the team was
ranked number one inWestern NewYork and number two in
New York State Class B.
Crew
The 2012-13 Canisius Crusaders Rowing Team proved to
be a powerhouse again as three eights won gold medals in
the New York State Scholastic Rowing Championships in
Saratoga Springs. In addition, a Canisius freshman four won
gold, and a novice eight and freshman eight won silvers.
