2012 JOHN F. BARNES AWARD
he John F. Barnes Award memorializes
the 42-year coaching career of the legendary
Crusader coach.
The award recognizes the achievements of a member of the
Canisius High School community who has continued to
distinguish himself in the field of athletics. In 2012, Canisius
recognized Ron Ahrens as that man.
Ron Ahrens has been a part of the Canisius High School
athletic community for over 65 years. As a student he played
on the varsity hockey team for three years. He played
J.V. football, Crusader baseball and was a member of the
Minims and Acrions. Mr. Ahrens switched from a player’s
helmet to a coach’s hat and set an early example of his
lifelong commitment to CHS Athletics.
Mr. Ahrens has a long history of involvement with the school.
In the late 1970s Ron was asked to join the newly formed
Canisius High School Board of Trustees. He served two terms
on the board, including serving as chairman for two years. He
and his wife Margie have eight children. Their four sons,
John ’82, Jim ’87, Ron, Jr. ’91, and Chris ’93 all graduated
from Canisius High School and Ron, Jr. has worked at the
school for over ten years and currently serves as director of
Christian service.
