28 Canisius High School Today
Fed team pulled off two landmark wins, ending
Williamsville North’s 40-game winning streak
and beating top-rated St. Joe’s in the semifinals.
For the second consecutive year, the J.V.
Blue hockey team earned a trip to the NYS
Tournament and came home with a champion-
ship banner. The Crusaders defeated Lew-Port
6-3 to earn the J.V. State Title.
Basketball Continues Dominance
The threeCanisius basketball teams continued
their high level play as the varsity team won its
second straight Manhattan Cup. The Freshman
and Junior Varsity teams won their respec-
tive league titles, as well. The Varsity Crusaders
earned the league title with a win over St. Joe’s
in the regular-season finale and knocked off St.
Mary’s towin the Cup. The teamthen traveled to
Long Island to face St. John the Baptist in the NYS
Catholic semifinal round, where the Crusaders
lost a hard-fought battle.
Matt Hart ‘12 and AdamWeir ‘13were named
First Team All-WNY by the Buffalo News. Hart
will play at HamiltonCollege next year, andWeir
has verbally committed to Canisius College.
Indoor Track
DenzelBenton’13establishedanewschool re-
cord in the 55-meter sprint at the Southern Tier
Invitational with a time of 6.63. The Indoor track
event was held at Cornell University. Benton, a
standout on the school’s football team, beat
Tom Spulecki’s ‘11mark which was set last year.

The Crusaders’ senior eight beat Chaminade
High School by more than two seconds for the
NewYork State title. Teammembers areNicholas

Mangan ‘12, Jack Sardinia ‘13, Reid Yankowski
’13 and coxswain Nick Breeser ‘12. Canisius’s
second eightwon its race in5:05.80. Teammem-
bers areDeclanAlbert’13 , Jake Filby ‘14, Pierson
Janes ‘12, Daniel Luongo ‘13, DavidMilitello ‘14,
Owen Ogiony ‘13, Jon Puma ‘12, Mark Saltarelli
‘14 and Daniel Sullivan ‘12. The Crusaders’ nov-
ice eight took its title with a time of 5:45.40 over
the Pelham Community Rowing Association.
The novice eight crew comprises Matt Borowiak
‘15, Allan Collins ‘14, Matt Flejtuch ‘15, Casmir
Garrison ‘15, Alex Kazmierczak ‘13, Corey
Luksch ‘14, William Quinn ‘15, Stoyan Ruh ‘15
and Dylan Sabuda ‘15.
All three crews qualified for the Scholastic
Rowing Championships, while the Senior 8
qualified for the nationals held in Tennessee.
