Crusaders see victory
on and off the field
Canisius swimmers dominate
Canisius swept every event at the All-Catholic
Swimming Championships at the Flickinger
Center. It was the Crusaders’ 10th straight title.
Canisius scored 218 points, St. Joe’s had 117, and
St. Francis notched 76.
Sophomore Jack Boyd won the 50 free in a
season-best 21.79 and the 500 free and was on
two winning relays. Senior Dylan Telford was
a double winner, taking the 100 and 200 free.
Sophomore Luke Otto won the 200 individu-
al medley and was on the winning 200 medley
relay. Other winners for Canisius were junior
Mark Hilton in the 100 butterfly, senior Michael
Wozniak in the 100 backstroke and junior
ChristianWestermeier in the breaststroke.
Boyd, Telford, Westermeier, Otto, Hilton and
Wozniak all qualified for the New York State
Championships. Boyd ‘14 earned two New York
State Federation titles while breaking Western
New York records in the 200 and 500 free-
style events. He swam a 1:38.27 in the 200 free
to break the record of 1:39.77 set in 1985. His
4:30.31 in the 500 broke his own record. Boyd’s
two times are automatic All-American times. The
Crusaders 200 and 400 free relays each finished
fourth, led by Boyd, Chrisitan Westermeier ‘13,
Mike Wozniak ‘12 and Dylan Telford ‘12. as a
team, Canisius finished third out of 76 teams
Bowlers Place Third
The Varsity Bowling Team completed its
2011-12 season with a third-place finish in the
All Catholic Championship at Thruway Lanes.
The eventual winner of the event was Bishop
Timon St. Jude, 28 pins ahead of the Crusaders.
At the awards ceremony, two Canisius students,
Sean Mattrey ’13 and Andrew Monti ’12, re-
ceived First Team All Catholic honors. They will
now participate in The New York State Catholic
Singles Championships, being held at Thruway
Lanes. Also at the ceremony, the Junior Varsity
Bowling Team picked up its championship
trophy. Rob Bannister ‘13 received an award for
high single game (227) of the year and teamed
with Tom Quebral ‘13 to win the J.V. Doubles
Shootout at the end of the season.
Wrestlers Finish Strong
Following a third place regular-season fin-
ish, the wrestling team finished its season at the
New York State All-Catholics in Staten Island.
Canisius finished in 15th place out of 20 schools.
Freshman Joe Santa Lucia (106lbs) placed fifth in
the event, while Junior Jack Ruh (126lbs) wres-
tled well, going 2-2 on the weekend. Santa Lucia
won the MMAA All-Catholics at 106, while Ruh
finished second. Antonio Montanez also had a
strong MMAA All-catholic showing, finishing
fifth.
Hockey Teams Move in the Right Direction
All four Canisius hockey teamsmade improve-
ments from last season. The Varsity Club team
hada solid regular seasonandadvanced to league
playoffs. The Varsity Federation and JV Blue and
Gold hockey teams advanced to the champion-
ship game of their respective leagues. The Varsity
