Ronald F. Ahrens ‘50 named
John F. Barnes Award recipient
Eight individual alumni and the 1994, 1995,
1996 and 1997 Georgetown Cup Champion
baseball teams will be the newest inductees into
Canisius High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame. In
addition, Ronald F. Ahrens ‘50 will receive the
2012 John F. Barnes Award, instituted by the
Canisius High School Class of 1932 to memori-
alize legendary coach Johnny Barnes. The award
recognizes the achievements of a member of the
Canisius community who has continued to dis-
tinguish himself in the field of athletics.
The teams being honored are the 1994, 1995,
1996 and 1997 Georgetown Cup Champion
baseball teams. These teams are the only group
to ever win four consecutive Georgetown Cup
Championships.
The individual alumni inductees are:

The school’s Alumni Association presents the
Athletic Hall of Fame awards each year to alum-
ni who had exemplary athletic careers while
attending Canisius. This year’s induction cere-
mony takes place at 6 p.m., Sat., Oct. 6, 2012, in
the school’s auditorium. Registration informa-

Canisius to Enshrine Alumni in Athletic Hall of Fame
Adam R. Baber ’01
has been appointed to the role of assistant principal for cur-
riculum and instruction. Before taking time to obtain his master’s degree from Stanford
University, he was Canisius’s director of student activities. Baber joined the faculty in
2005 to teach history, government and economics, receiving the Ignatian Educator of
the Year Award in 2011.
“I’m delighted to return to Canisius in this new role,” says Baber. He is responsible for
oversight of existing and new curriculum initiatives and redesign of the course selection
and scheduling process, and will provide support for the burgeoning one-to-one technology program.
Baber also serves as a general assistant and adviser to the principal in all areas of Canisius life.
Baber’s education and Canisius experiences, including managing non-athletic student activities and spe-
cial events, uniquely prepare him to examine current processes and curricula and to help develop im-
provements that will best meet the 21st century educational needs of college bound students.
He earned his bachelor of arts in history and music at Bowdoin College (2005) and his master’s in
education policy, organization, and leadership studies at Stanford University (2012). An accomplished
musician, Baber is an avid tennis player and has traveled throughout Asia, Europe and Mexico.
Jeff Gemmer
, Canisius High School health and physical education teacher, freshman football assistant
coach and club rugby moderator, is the new alumni moderator.
“This will give me a chance to reconnect with many alumni I haven’t had a chance to talk with for a
while,” Gemmer says of his new role. He will help Canisius graduates stay invested in their alma mater
