Canisius High School Today
John Knight’s Round Table
Dear Canisius Family,
Every so oftenwhen I am in a conversationwith another person I will be askedmy
age. I tell the other person my age, and, more times than not, they will say, “You
are young!” I must admit that, as I just turned 54 years old, I do not hear that com-
ment as frequently as I did when I was 34 years old. However, it is nice to know
that someone still thinks that I am young!
The words “young” and “old” have several different meanings for all of us. In
this issue of Canisius High School Today, you will meet a handful of our
“young” alumni. Young in this context means those who are not too far
removed from their days at Canisius. While we have many older alumni
who are, indeed, quite young at heart, the alumni you will read about
possess not only the benefit of actually being younger but also of life ex-
perience that helped form them into men who make a difference in our
world. I trust you will feel uplifted by their stories.
On another note, I am proud and happy to announce the launch of the
Alumni Volunteer Corps (AVC) at Canisius. This wonderful program of-
fers our alumni who have recently graduated from college the opportu-
nity to return to Canisius for a year of service all while living a simple
lifestyle in community with other members of the AVC. We are blessed
in this inaugural year of the AVC program to have four young alumni
return to Canisius. You will read about them and their journey back to
1180 Delaware in this issue, too.
We welcomed 817 young men back to school in September. The joy, energy and
good spirit they bring with them lifts all of our spirits each day. We completed our
walk-a-thon in late September; thanks to our students, faculty and staff, we raised
more than $65,000! The students decided to spend themajority of that money on
a much-needed new school bus.
The Lord continues tobless us in somanyways. This issue of “CanisiusHigh School
Today” will introduce you to a sampling of the blessings we enjoy. I thank you and
your loved ones for your continued prayers and support of our Jesuit mission. Rest
assured that all of us—young and not so young!— are continuing to pray for you
and your loved ones.
Ad MajoremDei Gloriam!
