Western New York’s First School-sponsored
Habitat House Completed by Crusaders and Friends
Summer 2012
Nearly a year’s work by Crusaders, their families and friends
came to a close when Western New York’s first school-spon-
sored Habitat for Humanity project was dedicated in March.
Canisius sponsored and oversaw the construction of the two-
story home for a family on Laurel Street in Buffalo. Canisius
also had a school-wide observance of the dedication in April as
part of its Holy Week observance. Habitat’s director and proj-
ect manager joined students and other guests at the school for
an official celebration.
“HolyWeek was the perfect time since we focused on resur-
rection as a theme for the whole process. It was at that event
that we premiered the movie created by our students that
documents the house and also recognizes all the volunteers,”
said Father Frederick Betti, S.J.
Crusaders continue to work with Habitat and the house’s owner since the dedica-
tion. They installed a second shower unit that was not part of the original plan. They also
worked with an electrician to dig and install wiring for the garage and replaced the old
garage door. A student also will install new fencing in the yard as an Eagle Scout project.
