It was a classic case of reaching
across the aisle: Canisius rower Reid
Yankowski ‘13 recently invited mem-
bers of rival crew teamMcQuaid Jesuit
from Rochester to partner in rais-
ing money for the Juvenile Diabetes
Research Foundation by together row-
ing the length of the Erie Canal. The
crew team, made up of now-senior
rowers from each school, made the
340-mile waterway journey begin-
ning on June 14 and embarking from
the University at Buffalo boathouse on
Tonawanda Creek.
Yankowski originally developed the
idea as a way to kick off his summer.
Recruiting rowers to the effort last fall,
the service project emerged after one
participant suggested that rowing for a
cause would give even more meaning
to the adventure.
Rowing for friends and neighbors
who live with Type I Diabetes carried
the 13 oarsmen through eight 42-mile
days, with nights spent camping along
the Canal.
McQuaid Jesuit crew members
Cameron Pizzo, Greg Klumpp, Loudon
Blake, AndrewDardaris, TommyDavis,
Steven DiFiore and Grant Gifford
rowed alongside Canisius crew mem-
bers Yankowski, Jack Ruh ‘13, Mark
Hirschbeck ‘13, Jack Sardinia ‘13, Sam
Hausmann ‘13 and Owen Ogiony ‘13
for their eight-day journey down the
Canal. Supervised by Canisius Rowing
Club Head Coach Tom Flaherty, who
followed in a motorboat, the crews
rowed an average 45 miles per day un-
til they reachedWaterford on June 21.
The boys’ original goal was $50,000
when McQuaid agreed to join forc-
es with Canisius. The night before
their departure, the boys surpassed
their goal before an oar hit the wa-
ter. The athletes increased their goal
to $60,000 and have raised nearly
$70,000 to date.
